Webinar: How the White Mountain Apache Tribe Addressed Youth Suicide
This presentation is part of the Healthy People 2020 feature “Who’s Leading the Leading Health Indicators?” LEARN MORE ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH LEADING INDICATOR PROJECT
The 45-minute session will provide an overview of the Mental Health Leading Health Indicator (LHI), one of 12 LHI topics released by the US Department of Health and Human Services. The event will also highlight one program’s success around suicide prevention in a Tribal community.
The burden of mental illness in the United States is among the highest of all diseases. Combined with the serious impact on physical health, mental health disorders can have harmful and long-lasting effects not only on those living with the disorders, but also on their loved ones and communities. This is a particularly important issue among American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Youth suicide rates in these communities are disproportionately higher than the national average. Join the “Who’s Leading the Leading Health Indicators?” webinar on May 23 as experts discuss the issue of mental illness. The webinar will be led by Dr. Don Wright, HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and will feature the success of the White Mountain Apache tribe in using data-driven decisions and interventions to address youth suicide.

New PSA Campaign Unveiled by SAMHSA - “Talk. They Hear You”
“Talk. They Hear You.” equips parents and caregivers with the tools and information they need to start talking with children as young as 9 years old about the dangers of alcohol. The campaign’s TV, radio, and print public service announcements (PSAs) in English and Spanish feature parents “seizing the moment” to talk with their children about alcohol while preparing dinner or doing chores together. By modeling behaviors in these PSAs, parents can discover the many “natural” opportunities for initiating the conversation about alcohol with their children. Visit the “TALK. THEY HEAR YOU” WEBSITE.
